Artist's Description
This is Coffenbury Lake in Fort Stevens State Park on the coast of Northwest Oregon. Coffenbury Lake, named after the first European settler of the land, was formed by the buildup of rainwater between large dunes along the beach about 150 years ago. Fort Stevens is an old military outpost that guarded the mouth of the Columbia river. The other fort nearby is Fort Clatsop which was the encampment of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in the Oregon Country near the mouth of the Columbia River during the winter of 1805-1806. Fort Stevens is also famous for hosting the wreck of the Peter Iredale, the remains of which can still be seen on the beach to this day. Peter Iredale was a four-masted steel barque sailing vessel that ran ashore October 25, 1906, on the Oregon coast en route to the Columbia River.
